What is the V Class?

v klasse melbourne, v class, mercedes services south melbourne, mercedes car service south melbourne, mercedes benz recall, mercedes benz service melbourne, volks affairThe V in V-Klasse stands, essentially, for Van. The V-Class is Mercedes-Benz’ people movers and courier vans, or MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles). The smaller, panel vans are called Vito, and the larger models, V-Class or Viano.

Mercedes-Benz first started producing V-Klasse (MPV) vehicles in the mid to late 1990s. Second-generation models have been used as London black cabs, people movers and courier vans. The third-generation V-Klasse went into production in 2014.

What is the Problem?

382 V-Klasse Viano and Vito 2015 models are being recalled over a potential airbag fault. Unlike the Takata airbag recall which affected BMW last year, Mercedes-Benz are concerned that driver’s airbags may deploy “without obvious cause”.

Affected models’ have improperly-grounded steering columns with damaged or faulty switch modules. The combination leads to electrostatic discharge, which in turn triggers the airbag and/or its warning alerts on the dashboard.

What Should I Do?

Mercedes-Benz have released the VIN of affected models. If yours is on this list, have your V-Klasse taken to your dealer for a free repair.
